    Description

This Serbian postcard (printed in Prague) has a postmark dated October 11, 1917 and a three line “Censored, Royal and Imperial Army Station, Belgrade” on a postcard depicting a number of Serbian Pirot carpets.   It should be remembered that what started as a dispute between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Serbia quickly expanded into the first world war.   Serbia’s carpet weaving in Pirot is famous.  In the late 19th century and up to WWII, Pirot carpets were used as an insignia of Serbian royalty. the most important rug-making centers in the Balkans and its earliest written mention dates from 1565.  Currently in Serbia a revival of Pirot carpet making is being encouraged.
